Spondylitis
 
die, -/...'tiden, Wirbel|entzündung, meist durch hämatogene (auf dem Blutweg) Streuung von Bakterien hervorgerufene Entzündung der Wirbelkörper. Dabei handelt es sich meist um unspezifische (z. B. Staphylokokken, Colibakterien), seltener um spezifische (Tuberkulose, Syphilis) Erreger. Anzeichen der Erkrankung sind Schmerzen, Bewegungseinschränkung und Fieber, bei Ausbreitung in den Wirbelkanal kommt es auch zu neurologischen Symptomen. - Die Behandlung erfolgt medikamentös mit Antibiotika und wird durch Bettruhe, Gipsbett oder Korsett unterstützt. In schweren Fällen ist eine operative Abszessausräumung erforderlich. Bei Heilung kommt es oft zu einer Versteifung des betroffenen Wirbelabschnittes.
